How To Find The IP Address From An E-mail

. . .An IP Address

An Internet Protocol address (IP address) is a numerical label assigned to each device (e.g., computer, printer) participating in a computer network that uses the Internet Protocol for communication

Source: Wikipedia

I have been concerned by Emails sent to my friends here at HP. And they suggested a tutorial on how to find the IP address of the sender. IP addresses were assigned to any device connected to the Net.

ARPANET, way back in 1969, wanted to link all the Computers from Our Military in case there could be an attack from a foreign Country(cold war). Eventually they thought it was fine to do the same with our Universities. IP stands for "Internet protocol" therefore IP address is the license plate and location of the terminal where you are working from, in this case my laptop. When I make a comment on any hub, you might have noticed these weird numbers 122:343:300 in shady gray. That tells anyone your actual location and that can help us to find out who is really behind those Emails. There is an army of cheap software engineers that try to get5 hold of our emails to resend crap spam or stupid pills, using your email to resend them to your friends. They get their 10 dollars a day pay, but for them is worth a 200 dollars of food in those poor Countries.

STRAIGHT TO BUSINESS

YOU OPEN YOUR IN BOX MAIL...

In our case we open our mail at Yahoo. and you see the regular Email from a sender. All is cool, headers, hello, take care. But where is the IP that we need to get hold of.

LOOK FOR IT IN THE TOOLS BUTTONS OF ANY EMAIL

This can be disheartening but take it like a task. In the case of Yahoo, we clicked on the More actions button, it can recognized by the little gear pic, like in any cellphone. We look for "VIEW FUL HEADER"

FOR GMAIL ACCOUNTS:

In Gmail you can go to the upper right corner, NEXT TO REPLY, there is a insignificant arrow that will highlight vMORE, a new window will open with options as print, source or mark as unread but you want to be smart today and:

Look for "SHOW ORIGINAL", meaning show the source of the programming.

What is troublesome for the 'newbee'.. is to see all these numbers and crazy programming headers that web designers see and make use of.

OUR TARGET IN THE MESSY LOOKING HTML (hypertext markup language)

In Yahoo, your target is locate this simple sort of equation:

X-Originating-IP: [199.59.148.232]

You are smart enough to look for this X-Originating. Think of using your ATM card for the first time, you get prompted and you just follow the instructions, right?

To give you a little tip, you will find it right at the middle of these unintelligible Chinese puzzle words.

In the case of Gmail, is about the same, but you will be shown an Original Email with all its content. You will have to look for something like this

(mail-gy0-f197.google.com [209.85.160.197])

Your needle in the HAYSTACK IS found: 209.85.160.197, paste it and hold on to it

The key is just practice, make mistakes and do it again. No worries.

Now there are thousands of places where you can take this info and paste it in it and after refreshing the site,, you will find and get the city, the map and all you need to know about the sender. The IP above is from tweeter and most likely will show Palo Alto or silicon Valley as the originating address.

To get a quick result we take our "X-Originating-IP: [199.59.148.232]"

to a site like this:

http://www.geobytes.com/IpLocator.htm?GetLocation

scroll down and look for a paragraph locator's:

IP Address to locate: ___________ SUBMIT/

Paste THE SNATCHED IP address (just the numbers) and submit; (REFRESH)

In a matter of seconds you will get what you were looking for.

  • LOCATION
  • CITY
  • FLAG
  • COUNTRY OF ORIGIN
