ROCK OF THE 80'S: 'TEARS FOR FEARS'

First things first:

In 1981, MTV was launched as the new Musical network. Wow! Exactly 30 years ago. I was in College studying Mechanical Engineering, like any normal guy in his early twenties. Between Thermodynamics and Fluids or Laplace, I always had time to carry my own Cassette player (or 'Walkman' for others). One of my first groups that I really got my mind set into was... Tears for fears.

THE BEGINNING...

When they came out with their Album the hurting in 1982, they were still evolving from its old originating band: 'Graduates'. So, their main influence was punk and synthesizers. By early 1985 they hired Ian Stanley on the keyboards and a new drummer , Manny Elias. It is funny but, when they were recording their songs for the 'big chair', Meaning 'Shout' and 'Mothers talk' They were not too happy with the way the new song called: 'Everybody wants to rule the world' sounded. Their primal influence was not aligned with this new baby. Chris Hughes who was about to become their producer for the next four years, convinced Roland Orzalbal to emulate the beat from Waterfront, sang by Simple Minds. Ian Stanley and Roland (or 'Raoul' , the name his parents originally chose for him before emigrating to England) Worked on the Lyrics... It took them just a few hours to arrange the lyrics as we know them today. Just have in mind that in that month 'USA for Africa' was in vogue in all the stations around the world. What is funny is that Roland was very much into his inseparable Guitar.

VIDEOS AND EXPOSURE

If you ever see all the videos, he makes his cadences and moves always around his Guitar. "'Shout' just came easier," he said. " I was beyond rebellious with my older generation, and I always had in my mind the word, 'Shout'. I had to finish the first stanza and all came right on!: Let it all out!.. this are the things I can do without!... come on, I'm talking to you." And the rest is just history.

2010

On June 2010, I was at work and my friend next to me was checking the website for Ticketmaster. He toldd me that TFF was going to be In Jersey on August 2010. I was like... No way man! And yeah! I became part of History too. I was seeing my favorite group in ATLANTIC CITY on August 20th. The guys were there. Of course they were older and had a new drummer and a talented Guitar player. I was so close to them that I thought I was going to shake Curt Smith's hand, The place? "House of Blues". The most memorable words from Curt and Roland were thank you New Jersey! and will see you on the Board walk!
